The restoration of 60 Meeting Street in Charleston has been selected to receive a 2026 South Carolina Historic Preservation Honor Award in recognition of its exceptional commitment to preserving one of the city's most iconic historic residences. Originally constructed in 1771 and extensively renovated in 1893, the project embraced a meticulous, research-driven approach to restore the home to its late nineteenth-century appearance while thoughtfully upgrading it for modern living.

Before work began, extensive architectural investigation, paint analysis, and material testing guided every aspect of the restoration. Deteriorated stucco was carefully repaired using historically compatible materials, while the home's striking white exterior was returned to its documented 1893 appearance. One of the project's most remarkable achievements was the recreation of the distinctive stamped metal mansard roof. Using an original salvaged roof tile, craftsmen worked with a specialized manufacturer to produce 2,000 custom lead-coated copper shingles, ensuring both historical accuracy and long-term durability.

The restoration also included the painstaking rehabilitation of the building's historic wood windows, decorative metalwork, chimneys, balconies, and masonry, along with the reconstruction of lost architectural features based on historic photographs. The property's historic outbuildings and garden walls were stabilized and restored, archaeological resources were documented during excavation, and structural improvements were discreetly incorporated to ensure the home's longevity while preserving its historic fabric.

Long recognized by Charlestonians for its prominent location at the corner of Meeting and Tradd Streets and its beloved seasonal decorations, 60 Meeting Street remains a treasured landmark in the Holy City. Through extraordinary craftsmanship, historical research, and attention to detail, this restoration has safeguarded an irreplaceable piece of Charleston's architectural heritage, ensuring it will continue to enrich the city's historic landscape for generations to come.
