Taylor House
PRESERVATION HONOR AWARD

Beginning in 1950, the Taylor House held the Columbia Museum of Art for almost 50 years, but its origin began in 1908 as a private home designed by a renowned Boston architectural firm. Through meticulous archival research, physical evidence and oral history with Susan Boyd, granddaughter of the original owners, the Taylor House is now part of the University of South Carolina’s School of Law, housing its admissions office and conference space. In the course of renovation, incompatible additions were removed, exposing the building’s historic façades, historic materials were refurbished and new material was made to match original (such as the terra cotta roof tiles, was installed and original openings, bricked over during the building’s former uses, were reopened). The 10-year phased project reflects care, patience, commitment and continuity in this exemplary project.
