Anderson Post Office
PRESERVATION HONOR AWARD

The Beaux Arts Post Office in Anderson was designed by James Knox Taylor and constructed in 1909, immediately becoming a centerpiece of downtown Anderson. In the 1940s, the Postal Service moved out and a Funeral Home moved in. The conversion of the post office to use as a funeral home had relatively minor effect on the exterior but drastic impacts on the interior. In 2021, the property was purchased by a preservation minded buyer to become the offices of Caldwell Banker Caine. Benefitting from access to the original plans from the national archives, the team was able to uncover and restore original elements such as iron staircases, the original lobby glass wall was rebuilt and obscured ornament, marble and terrazzo floors were opened up and restored.
The resulting rehabilitation was recognized by the jury as a well researched, successful project that sensitively fit a new use into a landmark building while revealing and celebrating its historic character.
