Slater Hall, Slater

Slater Hall has been selected to receive a 2026 South Carolina Historic Preservation Honor Award in recognition of the outstanding restoration of one of Greenville County's most treasured historic community landmarks. Constructed in 1938 as the centerpiece of the Slater Mill Village, the three-story Classical Revival building served for decades as the social, cultural, and recreational heart of the community. Once home to a gymnasium, theater, meeting spaces, classrooms, and civic organizations, Slater Hall reflects the rich history of South Carolina's textile industry and the mill villages that helped shape communities across the Upstate.

After years of deferred maintenance and changing building code requirements, Slater Hall was condemned in the 1990s and slated for demolition. Thanks to the persistent advocacy of local residents and community stakeholders, Greenville County chose preservation over demolition, recognizing the building's significance as both an architectural landmark and a symbol of community identity. A comprehensive restoration effort followed, guided by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, transforming the long-vacant building into a fully accessible, modern community center while preserving its historic character.

The restoration carefully repaired and reinstated many of the building's defining architectural features, including the original wood siding, historic windows, plaster walls, maple flooring, decorative trim, tilework, lighting, and high-backed sinks. A remarkable discovery during the project—the building's long-lost original rooftop flagpole hidden away in the attic—allowed it to be restored and returned to its prominent place atop the structure. Modern upgrades, including a new elevator, renovated restrooms, a commercial kitchen, updated utilities, and accessibility improvements, were thoughtfully integrated to ensure the building could continue serving the community for generations to come.

Today, Slater Hall has reclaimed its role as the heart of the historic mill village. The restored building hosts programs for seniors and youth, community gatherings, and recreational activities, once again serving as the vibrant gathering place it was intended to be nearly ninety years ago. The success of the project demonstrates the lasting value of investing in historic places and stands as an inspiring example of how preservation can strengthen communities, honor local heritage, and breathe new life into South Carolina's historic landmarks.
