South Caroliniana Library, Columbia
PRESERVATION HONOR AWARD
The South Caroliniana Library has been a fixture on the University of South Carolina since its original construction in 1840. Subsequent work on the building made it a more modern library but obscured some of its historic character. Design work began in 2017 and by 2023 the South Caroliniana Library reopened with a restored reading room, updated stacks and more spaces and galleries to exhibit some of the library’s vast and important collections. The sensitivity, exhaustive planning, and attention to historical detail was particularly appreciated by the jury.
